The "H" in 309H denotes a strictly controlled carbon content between 0.04% and 0.10%. As verified in the chemical composition table of this MTC, this elevated carbon range is essential for maximizing the alloy's creep resistance and structural strength at extremely high temperatures. Unlike the 309S (low carbon) variant which prioritizes weldability, 309H is engineered for mechanical load-bearing applications in thermal environments.
Creep is the tendency of a solid material to slowly move or deform permanently under the influence of persistent mechanical stresses, especially when exposed to severe heat. The specific chemical balance of 309H—specifically the elevated carbon acting as a strengthening agent within the grain boundaries—significantly reduces this deformation rate, making it ideal for furnace hardware, boiler baffles, and structural kiln supports.
Thanks to its robust 23% chromium and 13.5% nickel composition, Stainless Steel 309H offers phenomenal oxidation resistance. It is commonly utilized in continuous high-heat service environments at temperatures reaching up to 1038°C (1900°F). It performs exceptionally well even in atmospheres containing moderate amounts of sulfur, provided the environment remains oxidizing.
