The "L" indicates that the material is intended for Low-Temperature service. Standard alloy steel can become dangerously brittle in freezing conditions. Grades with the "L" designation are subjected to mandatory Charpy V-Notch impact testing at cryogenic temperatures (typically -101°C / -150°F) to guarantee they retain enough toughness to safely handle impact loads and pressure without cracking.
Both require low-temperature impact testing. The difference lies in the "M", which stands for Modified for sour service. Grade 7ML is tempered at a higher temperature to strictly limit its maximum hardness to 235 HBW (22 HRC). This ensures compliance with NACE MR0175 for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) environments, preventing Sulfide Stress Cracking. Grade 7L is allowed to have a higher maximum hardness and proof load, but cannot be safely used in sour gas environments.
Because the hardness limit is a critical safety factor in preventing sour gas cracking, ASTM A194 requires that 100% of Grade 7ML nuts be individually tested for hardness to ensure no single nut in the batch exceeds the 235 HBW / 22 HRC limit. Grade 7L, on the other hand, is usually tested on a statistical sampling basis.
