Nitrogen is intentionally alloyed into standard 304 stainless steel to act as a solid-solution strengthener. This controlled addition (0.10% - 0.16%) noticeably increases both the minimum yield strength (from 205 MPa up to 240 MPa) and minimum tensile strength without sacrificing the excellent ductility or toughness characteristic of austenitic stainless steels. Nitrogen also slightly improves resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride environments.
Grade B8N (Class 1) is carbide solution treated before the final machining and threading processes. Grade B8NA (Class 1A) is carbide solution treated in the finished condition. Solution treating the completely formed bolt removes residual stresses generated during manufacturing. This guarantees maximum resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and maintains a strict 90 HRB maximum hardness limit, whereas B8N is allowed up to 96 HRB.
