The addition of roughly 5% Chromium (along with 0.5% Molybdenum) significantly boosts the alloy's resistance to high-temperature oxidation and sulfide corrosion. This makes B5 a preferred material in petroleum refineries and chemical processing environments where standard carbon steels would rapidly degrade.
ASTM A193 explicitly requires Grade B5 to be quenched and tempered, with a strict minimum tempering temperature of 1100°F (593°C). This high tempering heat relieves internal stresses and ensures the material possesses the necessary ductility and toughness, preventing brittle failure when exposed to high operational stresses and temperatures.
While Grade B7 (Cr-Mo steel) is standard for many high-pressure, high-temperature uses, Grade B5 (with its higher 5% Chromium content) offers vastly superior corrosion resistance against hot sulfur compounds. It is specifically selected when the corrosive environment in a refinery exceeds the capabilities of standard B7 bolting.
