The "A" suffix stands for Class 1A processing. Standard Grade 8 nuts can be produced from stainless steel bars that were solution annealed prior to cold forming. In contrast, Grade 8A nuts must undergo a mandatory solution annealing heat treatment after they have been fully formed and machined. This step ensures all stress introduced during manufacturing is completely removed, providing optimal resistance to environmental stress corrosion cracking.
Both grades use an AISI 304 chemical composition, but they differ in how cold-work stresses affect their properties. Standard Grade 8 nuts retain some hardness and strength from the cold-forming process, whereas Grade 8A nuts are fully softened by post-machining annealing. This makes Grade 8A the preferred choice for systems requiring maximum ductility and reliable corrosion resistance, particularly in cryogenic or highly sensitive chemical configurations.
Capping the hardness at 233 HBW (or 95 HRB) serves as quality confirmation that the post-machining solution annealing treatment was fully successful. Keeping the material below this threshold preserves its un-stressed austenitic state, which prevents localized corrosion and minimizes the risk of thread galling during high-torque assembly preloads.
