Historically, UNS C26000 was the alloy of choice for manufacturing military and sporting ammunition cartridges. The ~70% Copper to ~30% Zinc ratio provides the absolute maximum ductility of any brass alloy, allowing it to undergo severe deep drawing and expansion without tearing or cracking.
UNS C36000 contains about 3% lead to make it easy to cut on a CNC lathe. However, that lead makes the metal brittle if you try to bend or hammer it. Because many bolts and screws are manufactured via cold heading (hammering a wire into the shape of a screw head), the highly ductile, lead-free C26000 must be used to prevent the heads from splitting during the forging process.
No. Like almost all standard copper-zinc brass alloys, C26000 is completely non-magnetic. This makes it an excellent choice for fastening electrical assemblies, compass housings, and equipment where magnetic interference cannot be tolerated.
