Why is Tin added to Naval Brass?

Standard yellow brasses (like C26000 or C36000) are susceptible to a corrosive attack in seawater known as "dezincification," where the saltwater chemically leaches the zinc out of the alloy, leaving behind a weak, porous copper shell. The addition of 0.50% to 1.00% Tin (Sn) in C46400 Naval Brass acts as a microscopic barrier, inhibiting this process and drastically extending the lifespan of fasteners submerged in marine environments.

How is C46400 different from standard brass in terms of manufacturing?

Naval Brass has an "Alpha-Beta" crystal structure. While highly ductile Cartridge Brass (Alpha structure) is great for cold-forming, the Alpha-Beta structure of Naval Brass makes it incredibly suitable for hot forging. This allows manufacturers to efficiently press massive, high-strength bolt heads for large ship assemblies and structural marine hardware.

Is Naval Brass magnetic?

No. UNS C46400 is entirely non-magnetic. In addition to its corrosion resistance, this property makes Naval Brass fasteners essential for naval warships, submarines, and marine navigation equipment where magnetic interference must be completely eliminated.
