ASTM A194 Grade 8R heavy hex nuts are formulated from a copper-modified variant of austenitic stainless steel (UNS S30430, matching AISI 304Cu). Incorporating 3.00% to 4.00% Copper fundamentally lowers the material's work-hardening rate. This provides exceptional cold ductility and extreme fracture toughness, which helps minimize micro-fissuring during intense structural cold-heading or thread-forming cycles.
Both grades leverage the exact same chemical formulation base (AISI 304Cu / UNS S30430). However, under ASTM A194 guidelines, Grade 8R parameters require solution heat treatment on the stock or blanks prior to standard final machining. Grade 8RA requires that the final solution annealing thermal treatment be completely executed *after* the heavy hex nuts have been fully machined and thread-tapped, entirely resetting any localized stresses introduced by tapping tools.
Capping the hardness at 233 HBW (95 HRB on the Rockwell B scale) provides definitive quality verification that the material stays in its homogeneous, solution-treated structural condition. Ensuring the alloy remains below this threshold preserves its un-stressed austenitic matrix state, which substantially minimizes thread galling or cold welding during high-torque assembly preloads.
