Aluminium 2011 is famously known as the Free Machining Alloy (FMA). The specific additions of Bismuth and Lead (0.20% - 0.60% each) act as chip breakers during machining operations. This allows the material to be machined at extremely high speeds on automatic screw machines while achieving an excellent surface finish.
Unlike pure aluminum grades, 2011 is heavily alloyed with Copper (5.00% - 6.00%). When subjected to solution heat treatment and natural aging (such as the T3 temper recorded on this MTC), the copper forms precipitates that drastically increase the tensile and yield strength of the fasteners.
