Hardened washers to F436 are necessary for high-strength structural bolting. They prevent damage to structural members under high-clamping forces and ensure the bolt tension is distributed evenly across the joint.
Standard mild-steel washers will crush or deform under the extreme clamping forces generated by high-strength structural bolts (like ASTM A325 or A490). Hardened F436 washers are specifically heat-treated to resist this deformation, ensuring that the intended bolt tension is maintained across the structural connection without damaging the mating surface.
Through-hardened washers are uniformly hardened across their entire cross-section, providing consistent hardness. Carburized washers (often designated Type 3 or for specific requirements) undergo a surface hardening process that produces a very hard exterior while maintaining a tougher core. The MTC will explicitly identify the heat treatment type used for your specific batch.
While they can be used with lower-strength bolts, they are mandatory for use with high-strength bolts (A325, A490, etc.) in structural joints. Because they are hardened, they can occasionally be brittle if impacted directly; they are intended to be placed in compression between the bolt/nut and the structural steel member.
