The addition of Copper (3.00-4.00%) and Molybdenum (2.00-3.00%) gives Alloy 20 its renowned resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion. These elements specifically empower the alloy to withstand highly aggressive environments, most notably hot sulfuric acid.
Alloy 20 is stabilized with Columbium (Cb) and Tantalum (Ta). You will see this verified on the MTC. This stabilization process effectively ties up carbon to prevent chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, which prevents embrittlement and makes the fasteners highly resistant to intergranular corrosion, even in the as-welded condition.
