Often referred to as 1 Cr - ½ Mo steel, Grade F12 uses a specific alloy mix to perform under heat. The Chromium (~1%) improves resistance to high-temperature oxidation and graphitization. The Molybdenum (~0.5%) is strictly added to increase the steel's creep strength—its ability to resist deformation over long periods of high stress and high temperatures.
ASTM A182 F12 forgings are typically supplied in the Normalized and Tempered or Quenched and Tempered condition. This MTC confirms the specific process applied, including a mandatory tempering cycle at a minimum of 650°C (1200°F) for Class 2. This tempering process ensures the material achieves optimal ductility and toughness.
Grade F12 is heavily utilized in the power generation, boiler, and petrochemical industries. It is a standard low-alloy choice for forged flanges, valves, and high-pressure fittings that are subjected to elevated temperatures, typically operating efficiently up to around 540°C (1000°F).
