The defining characteristic of the 310 series is its exceptionally high alloying content—specifically 25% Chromium and 20% Nickel. This provides vastly superior oxidation resistance, scaling resistance, and strength at high temperatures compared to standard grades like 304 or 316. It is commonly deployed in furnaces, burners, kilns, and cryogenic applications.
The distinction lies primarily in the carbon limits. Standard 310 has a maximum carbon content of 0.25%, making it highly durable for general high-temperature structural use. 310S has a lower carbon limit (0.08% max) to improve weldability and prevent embrittlement. 310H demands a highly specific carbon range (0.04% - 0.10%) to maximize high-temperature creep resistance. Your MTC will explicitly verify which carbon threshold your material meets.
Due to its rich Chromium-Nickel chemistry shown on the MTC, standard AISI 310 is highly oxidation resistant in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F), and intermittent service up to 1035°C (1895°F), provided no harmful sulfur gases are present in reducing environments.
