The primary difference lies in the carbon content. Alloy 309 is the standard grade with a maximum carbon content of 0.20%. Alloy 309S features a restricted carbon limit (0.08% max) which significantly improves weldability and prevents carbide precipitation during exposure to high temperatures. Alloy 309H features an intentionally higher carbon range (0.04% - 0.10%) engineered specifically for enhanced creep resistance at elevated temperatures. The chemical composition block on our MTC will explicitly state which variant's requirements have been met.
Due to their high Chromium and Nickel content, 309, 309S, and 309H grades offer exceptional oxidation resistance. They are typically used in continuous service applications up to 1038°C (1900°F) and intermittent service up to 1010°C (1850°F), assuming an oxidizing atmosphere. They also perform exceptionally well in environments containing sulfur, provided it is an oxidizing environment.
