ASTM A194 Grade 3 nuts are manufactured from a nominal 5% Chromium, 0.5% Molybdenum alloy steel (frequently grouped under AISI 501 chemistry criteria). The inclusion of Chromium dramatically enhances corrosion resistance against sulfur compounds and mitigates high-temperature oxidation, while Molybdenum provides excellent creep-rupture strength at service levels reaching up to 593°C (1100°F).
Due to its high resistance to hydrogen attack and high-temperature sulfidation, Grade 3 is highly sought after in petrochemical refineries, chemical processing units, and high-temperature steam generation piping systems. They are typically combined with ASTM A193 Grade B5 or B16 stud bolts to manage high-pressure flange joints securely.
Under ASTM A194 Grade 3 guidelines, the material must display a uniform hardness performance between 248 and 352 HBW. This equates roughly to a Rockwell rating of 24 to 38 HRC, giving the nut threads the exact balance of elastic yield and structural rigidity needed to prevent joint loosening under intense thermal cycles.
