ASTM A194 Grade 8T specifies premium austenitic stainless steel fastening components manufactured from AISI Type 321. This highly specialized grade is alloyed with Titanium, which acts as a powerful stabilizing agent. Titanium binds with carbon at high temperatures, preventing chromium carbide precipitation (sensitization) when the material operates in critical temperature ranges (800°F to 1500°F / 427°C to 816°C), thus ensuring the passive chromium oxide layer remains intact to fight intergranular corrosion.
Standard Grade 8T components are expertly machined from solution-treated bar stock, providing an exceptional balance of high tensile strength and high-temperature oxidation resistance for critical pressure piping and aerospace environments.
ASTM A194 Grade 8T represents the industry benchmark for high-temperature, titanium-stabilized austenitic pressure piping systems.

Grade 8T relies on a highly specific Titanium addition. This element preferentially bonds with carbon to form highly stable titanium carbides, leaving the Chromium intact to maintain the protective passive oxide layer.

Because austenitic stainless steels are highly prone to thread galling, especially in high-heat applications, premium high-temperature anti-seize lubrication (e.g., nickel-based) is absolutely mandatory.

When standard 304 stainless steel is heated to 800°F–1500°F, the carbon bonds with chromium, removing the protective chromium layer and causing rapid rust. Because Titanium has a higher affinity for carbon than Chromium does, the Titanium bonds with the carbon instead. This keeps the Chromium safely dissolved in the steel matrix, preserving the material's corrosion resistance.
A standard Grade 8T component may retain localized cold-work stresses from being machined and thread-tapped. Grade 8TA is an alternate designation where the component is solution-annealed after all machining is completely finished, eliminating all stresses.
