ToggleASTM A240 Type 316 is a specification for stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips which are for applications which require more superior corrosion resistance, greater strength and durability.
Austenitic stainless steel Type 316 is used highly in marine, chemical processing, food and beverage industries, and pharmaceuticals areas because it has more superior properties when compared to the Type 304.
Also called stainless steel alloy, ASTM A240 Type 316 contains high percentages of chromium (16-18%), nickel (10-14%), and molybdenum (2-3%) in addition to a small percentage of carbon, manganese, silicon, and other elements. In addition to the above characteristics, the presence of molybdenum enhances its resistance to corrosion as well as protects it from pitting and crevice corrosion by acting on chloride-rich and acidic environments.
Exquisite Resistance against Corrosion: Molybdenum alloy improves corrosion resistance to a large extent and moreover removes oxidation, particularly in extreme conditions such as marine and related uses or exposed to chlorides, acids, and other corrosive chemicals.
High-Temperature Performance: Type 316 resists temperatures to approximately 870°C (1600°F) where its mechanical as well as anticorrosion properties remain valid and get fully utilized for high-temperature applications.
Good Formability and Weldability: Similar to Type 304, Type 316 is very ductile and formable and can be easily fabricated and formed. This alloy is also weldable with good retention of strength and corrosion resistance of welded joints.
High Strength and Toughness: The character of Type 316 provides it with a more tensile strength and toughness for the applications undergoing tensile stress.
Marine and Coastal Equipment. (for e.g, boat fittings, seawater piping)
Chemical and Petrochemical Processing Equipment
Pharmaceutical and Food Processing Equipment
Medical Devices and Implants
Heat Exchangers and Pressure Vessels
ASTM A240 Type 316 stainless steel is a great choice for demanding applications which require superior corrosion resistance and toughness. Its resilience to harsh environments coupled with its strength and workability make it versatile and reliable for a wide spectrum of industries.
