ToggleASTM A240 Type 316Ti is a specification for stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips designed for enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly at high temperatures. Type 316Ti is an austenitic stainless steel alloy similar to Type 316 but with an additional small amount of titanium. The addition improves its strength at elevated temperatures, prevents sensitization, and thus is suitable for Elevated temperature environments and corrosive conditions.
It is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel alloy containing a small percentage of titanium typically ranging from 0.5%. The contents of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum lie in the range of 16-18%, 10-14%, and 2-3% respectively. The stabilization of the alloy is done using titanium, which does not allow the formation of carbide after welding or due to exposure at elevated temperatures so that it retains corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties in service.
Improved High-Temperature Properties: Titanium in Type 316Ti possesses elevated temperature strength, to an extent necessary for operations up to 870°C (1600°F), without being degraded in mechanical properties or corrosion resistance.
Resistance to Sensitization: The stabilizing effect of titanium prevents formation of chromium carbide at grain boundary faces during weld heat treatments and heat exposure so that sensitization-related problems such as intergranular attack and long term durability in corrosive media are eliminated.
Corrosion Resistance: Similar to Type 316, Type 316Ti also provides a very good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion by the presence of molybdenum. It can be used in chlorides, acids, and other nasty chemicals and can withstand its associated operating environments.
Excellent Formability and Weldability: The addition of titanium has not taken away the characteristic properties of ductility, formability, and weldability that are characteristic of austenitic stainless steels. It ensures ease in fabrication and welding with strong, corrosion-resistant welds.
