ToggleThis is the specification for precipitation-hardening stainless steel, also known by the 17-4 PH (PH is the abbreviation for Precipitation Hardening). It has extensive usage for applications that require high strength, good corrosion resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties, particularly after heat treatment. It is a martensitic stainless steel, which acquires its strength through precipitation hardening.
Composition of typical chemical 17-4 PH stainless steel:
Chromium (Cr): 15-17.5%
Nickel (Ni): 3-5%
Copper (Cu): 3-5%
Carbon (C): ≤0.07%
Manganese (Mn): ≤1.0%
Silicon (Si): ≤1.0%
The key characteristic of this alloy is that it can be solution heat treated to any level of strength, which makes it quite versatile for the application in various designs. Precipitation hardening is a process in which the material is treated with a high temperature followed by aging with lower temperatures attained to produce a high strength and high hardness.
High Strength and Hardness: In most cases, 17-4 PH can be heat-treated to very high levels of strength and hardness, making it the preferred material for high-stress applications such as parts to be used in aerospace and high-performance machines.
Good Corrosion Resistance: Even though 17-4 PH is not nearly as corrosion-resistant as some other austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 or 316, it still offers good resistance to corrosion in many environments, notably marine and mildly corrosive industrial settings.
Excellent Mechanical Properties: The alloy maintains excellent ductility, toughness, and wear resistance for applications that involve mechanical stres 17-4 PH can be easily machined and welded in the annealed condition, but its final properties may be adjusted by several heat treatments (H900, H1025, H1075, etc.) to acquire particular strength levels.
H900: Offers maximum strength at somewhat reduced toughness.
H1025: Balances strength with good toughness.
H1075 and H1150: Provide the best corrosion resistance and toughness. Strength is a little lower than H900.
