The distinction lies in the carbon control. Standard Alloy 347 specifies a maximum carbon limit of 0.08%, utilizing Niobium (Columbium) to prevent sensitization during welding. Alloy 347H enforces a specific carbon range of 0.04% to 0.10%. This intentionally higher carbon ensures superior creep resistance and strength for structural components operating constantly above 538°C (1000°F).
Yes. As demonstrated in this sample MTC, if the heat's chemical composition yields a carbon content that falls perfectly within the overlapping range of both specs (i.e., between 0.04% and 0.08%) and satisfies the minimum Niobium ratio, the material can be "dual certified" to meet both UNS S34700 and S34709 requirements.
Niobium (historically referred to as Columbium in US specs) is a strong carbide former. By bonding with the carbon in the steel, it prevents the carbon from depleting the chromium at the grain boundaries when the metal is exposed to the sensitization temperature range (800°F - 1500°F). This stabilization makes 347/347H virtually immune to intergranular corrosion, making it perfect for heavy welded assemblies that cannot be annealed post-weld.
