Grade 347H is uniquely alloyed with Columbium (also known as Niobium) and Tantalum. As shown in the MTC chemistry block, the concentration of these elements must be at least 8 times the carbon content. This acts as a stabilizer, preventing the depletion of chromium (carbide precipitation) at the grain boundaries when the material is exposed to temperatures between 800°F and 1500°F. This guarantees excellent intergranular corrosion resistance, particularly after welding.
While the Columbium in standard 347 prevents corrosion during heat exposure, the "H" designation specifically enforces a higher carbon range (0.04% to 0.10%). This intentional carbon level provides significantly greater structural strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures, making 347H the preferred choice for heavy load-bearing components in high-heat environments.
Because of its stabilized austenitic structure, 347H is widely used in heavy welded equipment where annealing after welding is not possible. It is highly effective in continuous service up to 1600°F (870°C). Common applications include petroleum refinery piping, fluid catalytic cracking units, boiler tubes, and heavy-duty exhaust manifolds.
