17-7 PH is a semi-austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel, whereas 17-4 PH is martensitic. As shown in the chemistry section of the MTC, 17-7 PH utilizes Aluminum (0.75 - 1.50%) for precipitation hardening instead of the Copper used in 17-4 PH. This allows 17-7 PH to maintain an austenitic structure during forming, which can then be transformed and aged to extreme high-strength levels.
Because it is semi-austenitic, the MTC typically logs a more complex multi-step thermal process compared to other PH grades. This often involves an initial Solution Anneal (Condition A), followed by an Austenite Conditioning step, and finally an Age Hardening process (such as Condition TH 1050 or RH 950) to achieve its final mechanical properties.
