ASTM A453 Grade 660 (A286 / UNS S66286) is an iron-base superalloy. The specific additions of Titanium (1.90 - 2.35%) and Vanadium (0.10 - 0.50%), as verified in the chemistry section, are crucial because they form the intermetallic precipitates during heat treatment that give the alloy its excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance up to 1300°F (704°C).
The MTC logs a two-step process required for Class A/B material: an initial Solution Anneal (typically at 1650°F / 899°C) followed by a liquid quench, and a subsequent Precipitation Hardening (Aging) phase (typically at 1325°F / 718°C for 16 hours) followed by air cooling.
Unlike standard stainless steels, Grade 660 fasteners are designed for high-temperature service. ASTM A453 requires a stress rupture test (typically testing the material under high stress at 1200°F for a minimum of 100 hours without failure) to guarantee the material will perform safely in high-heat turbine and exhaust environments.
