While both are carbon steel nuts within the ASTM A194 specification, Grade 1 is intended for moderate temperature and pressure services and has lower hardness/proof load requirements. It is typically not subjected to the intense quenching and tempering process required for the high-strength Grade 2H.
Grade 1 nuts are generally hot-forged or cold-punched and do not require the rigorous liquid quench and high-temperature temper applied to higher grades. The MTC reflects the standard as-formed or stress-relieved condition that meets the required 120 HBW minimum hardness.
Nuts are internally threaded fasteners, meaning their primary failure mode is thread stripping rather than breaking like a bolt. Therefore, standard compliance focuses on Proof Load Stress—the specific axial load the nut can support without experiencing permanent thread deformation.
