Grade 16 is a Chromium-Molybdenum-Vanadium alloy. The addition of Vanadium (0.25 - 0.35%) significantly enhances the steel's microstructural stability and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. This makes Grade 16 nuts suitable for extreme thermal environments where standard Grade 7 or Grade 4 nuts might gradually deform over time under load.
The MTC logs a Quench and Temper phase. ASTM A194 requires that Grade 16 nuts be reheated above their critical temperature, quenched in a liquid medium, and then tempered at a very high minimum temperature of 1200°F (650°C). This high tempering requirement ensures the material will not soften or lose its mechanical properties when exposed to high operational temperatures in power plants or refineries.
Nuts are internally threaded fasteners, meaning their primary failure mode is thread stripping rather than breaking like a bolt. Therefore, standard compliance focuses on Proof Load Stress—the specific axial load the nut can support without experiencing permanent thread deformation. For Grade 16 heavy hex nuts, this is rigorously tested and logged at 150,000 psi (1034 MPa).
