Grade 8M is manufactured from AISI Type 316 Austenitic Stainless Steel. It contains 16-18% Chromium, 10-14% Nickel, and crucially, 2-3% Molybdenum. This composition offers significantly better general corrosion resistance compared to standard Type 304, particularly against chlorides and industrial solvents.
While Grade 8 is made from Type 304 stainless steel, Grade 8M is made from Type 316 stainless steel. The primary difference is the addition of Molybdenum in Grade 8M. This specific alloying element dramatically increases the steel's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-heavy environments (such as marine operations, offshore platforms, and de-icing salt exposure).
During high-temperature manufacturing, stainless steel can precipitate chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, which locally depletes chromium and lowers corrosion resistance. The MTC confirms that the nuts were reheated to at least 1900°F (1040°C) to dissolve these carbides fully back into the alloy solution, followed by a rapid water quench to lock the optimal microstructure in place.
