Grade B8C and B8CA are manufactured from AISI 347 stainless steel. Columbium (also known as Niobium) is added to stabilize the steel. Similar to titanium in 321 stainless, columbium bonds with carbon during high-temperature exposure (425–870°C). This prevents chromium from depleting at the grain boundaries, providing superior resistance to intergranular corrosion. Columbium is highly preferred over titanium in welding applications because it does not burn off as easily in the welding arc.
While both are Columbium-stabilized 347 stainless steel, Grade B8C (Class 1) is carbide solution treated prior to final machining and threading. Grade B8CA (Class 1A) is carbide solution treated in the finished condition (after all forming is complete). This final heat treatment removes any residual stresses caused by cold working, resulting in a softer, highly ductile fastener with a strict maximum hardness of 90 HRB (compared to 96 HRB for B8C).
Yes, the MTC document strictly states that the material has been verified as free from radioactive contamination and has undergone a 100% visual inspection to ensure it is completely free from manufacturing defects before dispatch.
