Standard B8L (304L) has a restricted carbon limit (0.030% max) to prevent carbide precipitation during welding, but this lower carbon reduces the overall tensile and yield strength. Grade B8LN solves this problem by adding Nitrogen. The nitrogen acts as an interstitial solid-solution strengthener, effectively boosting the yield strength of the low-carbon steel back up to the levels of standard B8 (304) while maintaining full weldability and resistance to sensitization.
Class 1 denotes that the fasteners have been carbide solution treated (annealed) but not intentionally strain-hardened. This provides excellent ductility and weldability, keeping the maximum hardness to 96 HRB. The nitrogen ensures the yield strength does not drop below 205 MPa (30 ksi).
Yes, the MTC document strictly states that the material has been verified as free from radioactive contamination and has undergone a 100% visual inspection to ensure it is completely free from manufacturing defects before dispatch.
