UNS C17200 offers a highly unique combination of properties: it achieves the immense tensile strength of alloy steel (over 1,200 MPa) through precipitation hardening, but because its base is copper, it is inherently non-magnetic and non-sparking. This makes it an irreplaceable material for fasteners used in directional drilling (MWD/LWD) equipment, MRI machines, and explosive (ATEX) environments where steel would be unsafe.
Precipitation hardening (also called age hardening) is a thermal treatment. The fasteners are heated to a specific temperature and held there, allowing microscopic beryllium-rich particles to precipitate out of the solid copper matrix. These particles effectively "lock" the crystalline structure, massively increasing the metal's hardness and strength compared to its soft, annealed state.
Standard copper alloys (like ETP or Silicon Bronze) are relatively soft and are measured on the Rockwell B or F scales. Because Beryllium Copper achieves such extraordinary hardness (often 36-45 HRC) after age hardening, it must be measured on the Rockwell C scale—the exact same scale used to measure hardened steels and titanium alloys.
