Mechanically, Grade 7 and Grade 2 are identical. The defining difference is that Grade 7 contains between 0.12% and 0.25% Palladium. While Grade 2 is excellent in oxidizing environments (like seawater), it can suffer from crevice corrosion in hot halide media or attack by reducing acids (like hydrochloric or sulfuric acid). The Palladium in Grade 7 extends the passive range of the titanium, making it virtually immune to crevice corrosion and significantly extending its life in reducing environments.
Palladium is a noble metal. When added to titanium, it facilitates cathodic depolarization. In simple terms, it shifts the corrosion potential of the titanium alloy into the passive region, forcing the titanium to continuously reform its protective oxide layer even in hot, acidic environments that would normally strip the oxide layer away.
