What does "ELI" stand for and why is it important?

ELI stands for "Extra Low Interstitial." In the standard Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy, elements like Oxygen, Carbon, and Iron are allowed at higher levels. In the ELI version (Grade 23), these elements are strictly minimized. This chemistry dramatically improves the alloy's fracture toughness and ductility, making it the required standard for critical medical implants and advanced aerospace components subject to cyclic loading.

How does Grade 23 compare to standard Grade 5?

Grade 23 is simply a higher-purity version of Grade 5. The base alloying elements (6% Aluminum, 4% Vanadium) remain the same. The difference is the stricter control over impurities (Oxygen, Iron, Carbon). As a result, Grade 23 possesses better ductility and fracture toughness at the expense of a slight decrease in overall tensile strength compared to Grade 5.
