The addition of 2.00-2.50% Chromium significantly improves the material's resistance to high-temperature oxidation and graphitization. The 0.87-1.13% Molybdenum addition is crucial for vastly increasing the steel's creep strength (resistance to deformation under stress at high temperatures), making F22 an essential grade for steam and power piping.
ASTM A182 F22 is typically supplied in either the Normalized and Tempered or Quenched and Tempered condition. This MTC confirms the specific process applied, including a critical tempering cycle at a minimum of 675°C (1250°F). This tempering ensures the forgings achieve optimal toughness and ductility after the initial hardening phase.
Grade F22 (also known as 2 ¼ Cr – 1 Mo) is heavily utilized in the power generation, petrochemical, and oil & gas refining industries. It is the standard low-alloy choice for forged flanges, valves, and fittings that are subjected to elevated temperatures and high pressures, typically operating efficiently up to around 590°C (1100°F).
