In the metric property class system, the first number "10" indicates a nominal tensile strength of 1000 MPa (10 x 100). The second number ".9" indicates that the yield strength is 90% of the nominal tensile strength. As verified in the mechanical properties section, these bolts achieve a minimum tensile strength of 1040 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 940 MPa.
To reach high strength characteristics uniformly and reliably, Class 10.9 fasteners must be manufactured from alloy steel (or properly controlled boron steel) and subsequently quenched and tempered. ISO 898-1 requires a minimum tempering temperature of 425°C, ensuring the material retains sufficient ductility to handle dynamic loads.
Class 10.9 fasteners are engineered for highly stressed applications where Class 8.8 is insufficient. They are frequently utilized in heavy earth-moving equipment, automotive suspensions, wind turbines, and structural steel connections demanding high tensile preloads.
