What's Inside This AISI 420 MTC Certificate

This sample mill test certificate mirrors the rigorous QA documentation package standard for high-carbon, hardenable martensitic stainless steel orders shipped from Ananka Fasteners Pvt Ltd.

  • Full Traceability: Certified with TC No.: S155/26-XX and corresponding ASTM specifications to ensure seamless part-tracking.
  • Hardenable Martensitic Chemistry: Detailed breakdowns verifying the high Carbon (0.15% min) and Chromium (12.00% - 14.00%) content. This chemistry allows the steel to be heat-treated to achieve significant hardness and wear resistance.
  • Mechanical Properties Control: Comprehensive reporting of Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, and Elongation. Key focus is placed on the Brinell or Rockwell Hardness values, which are critical performance indicators for this grade's end-use in cutlery, surgical instruments, and wear-resistant hardware.
  • Quality Compliance: 100% visual inspection carried out and verified free from defects and radioactive contamination.

Technical FAQs — AISI 420 Martensitic Stainless Steel MTC Certificate

Why is Grade 420 described as "Martensitic"?

The term "Martensitic" refers to the specific metallurgical crystal structure formed when this steel is rapidly cooled (quenched) from a high temperature. This structure is extremely hard and strong, which is why Grade 420 is categorized as a "hardenable" stainless steel. This capability is fundamentally different from the "austenitic" grades (like 304 or 316), which are hardened by cold working, not heat treatment.

How does the carbon content influence the MTC results?

Carbon is the key element that enables the martensitic transformation. As verified in our MTC chemistry block, the 0.15% minimum carbon allows the material to attain high hardness levels during heat treatment. The final hardness reported on the certificate is a direct function of both this carbon content and the precision of the hardening and tempering process.

What are the typical applications for AISI 420 fasteners?

AISI 420 is utilized in applications where a balance of good corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength or wear resistance is required. Typical uses include surgical and dental instruments, high-performance cutlery, valve components, pump shafts, and industrial fasteners that must withstand abrasive environments while maintaining structural integrity.
