The term "Martensitic" refers to the specific metallurgical crystal structure formed when this steel is rapidly cooled (quenched) from a high temperature. This structure is extremely hard and strong, which is why Grade 420 is categorized as a "hardenable" stainless steel. This capability is fundamentally different from the "austenitic" grades (like 304 or 316), which are hardened by cold working, not heat treatment.
Carbon is the key element that enables the martensitic transformation. As verified in our MTC chemistry block, the 0.15% minimum carbon allows the material to attain high hardness levels during heat treatment. The final hardness reported on the certificate is a direct function of both this carbon content and the precision of the hardening and tempering process.
AISI 420 is utilized in applications where a balance of good corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength or wear resistance is required. Typical uses include surgical and dental instruments, high-performance cutlery, valve components, pump shafts, and industrial fasteners that must withstand abrasive environments while maintaining structural integrity.
