Technical FAQs — Aluminium 2011 MTC Certificate

Why is Bismuth (Bi) and Lead (Pb) included in this alloy?

Aluminium 2011 is famously known as the Free Machining Alloy (FMA). The specific additions of Bismuth and Lead (0.20% - 0.60% each) act as chip breakers during machining operations. This allows the material to be machined at extremely high speeds on automatic screw machines while achieving an excellent surface finish.

What makes Aluminium 2011 strong?

Unlike pure aluminum grades, 2011 is heavily alloyed with Copper (5.00% - 6.00%). When subjected to solution heat treatment and natural aging (such as the T3 temper recorded on this MTC), the copper forms precipitates that drastically increase the tensile and yield strength of the fasteners.

Are the materials free from radioactive contamination?

Yes, the document strictly states that the material is free from radioactive contamination and undergoes a 100% visual inspection to ensure it is free from defects.
