The addition of approximately 0.50% Molybdenum to the carbon steel matrix drastically improves the steel's high-temperature strength and creep resistance. While plain carbon steel begins to rapidly lose structural integrity above 400°C, Grade F1 provides reliable, prolonged service at moderately high temperatures in pressure systems.
Unlike higher "F" grades (such as F11, F22, or F9), ASTM A182 Grade F1 is strictly a Carbon-Molybdenum alloy, not a Chrome-Moly alloy. While it offers excellent strength, it lacks the chromium required to prevent graphitization at temperatures exceeding 468°C (875°F) for extended periods.
Grade F1 is commonly specified for forged flanges, fittings, and valves in steam piping, pressure vessels, and industrial boiler systems where operating temperatures are moderately high, yet do not require the advanced oxidation resistance of heavily alloyed chromium steels.
