As verified in the chemistry section of the MTC, Grade F5 contains approximately 5% Chromium and 0.5% Molybdenum. The higher Chromium content compared to F11/F22 provides a massive boost in resistance to sulfidation, oxidation, and hydrogen blistering, which are common degradation mechanisms in hot refinery environments.
ASTM A182 Grade F5 is typically supplied in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. When normalized and tempered, the minimum tempering temperature is strictly controlled (often 1250°F / 675°C) to ensure the material achieves optimal ductility and toughness without becoming overly hard and brittle.
Due to its excellent resistance to hot sulfide corrosion, Grade F5 is a standard material in the petrochemical and refining industries. It is heavily utilized for forged flanges, heat exchangers, valves, and piping components in crude distillation units and delayed cokers operating at elevated temperatures.
