Grade B7M is chemically identical to standard Grade B7 (both are AISI 4140/4142 alloy steel). However, B7M is tempered at a higher minimum temperature to achieve lower mechanical strength and a strictly controlled lower hardness limit. This specific treatment prevents Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) in "sour gas" (hydrogen sulfide, H2S) environments, making it fully compliant with NACE MR0175 standards.
In sour gas applications, steel that is too hard is highly susceptible to sudden, brittle failure known as stress corrosion cracking. To conform to ASTM A193 B7M and NACE MR0175, the MTC must prove that the material's hardness does not exceed 235 HBW or 99 HRB. Unlike many other grades, B7M requires 100% hardness testing of every single fastener in a lot to ensure this limit is never breached.
The MTC records a "Quenched and Tempered" heat treatment. Crucially for Grade B7M, the tempering process must be performed at a minimum of 1150°F (620°C). This higher tempering temperature is what differentiates its mechanical properties from standard B7, safely reducing the strength and hardness to acceptable limits for volatile environments.
