ASTM A193 GRADE B8 CLASS 1 BOLTS — DATASHEET, DIMENSIONS & MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Ananka Fasteners is a premier global manufacturer and supplier of ASTM A193 Grade B8 Class 1 Fasteners. Manufactured from premium AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel, these fasteners are explicitly engineered for high-temperature, high-pressure service applications, most notably within pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and critical petrochemical fittings.

To meet the rigorous A193 specification, Class 1 fasteners are strictly carbide solution treated (fully annealed). This controlled thermal processing ensures maximum ductility, uniform grain structure, and exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion, making them the definitive choice for structural integrity in elevated temperature environments. All our B8 studs, heavy hex bolts, and threaded rods are backed by EN 10204 Type 3.1 Material Test Certificates (MTC).

■ Mill Test Certificate (MTC) Integration

In safety-critical sectors such as offshore petrochemical extraction, nuclear power generation, and aerospace engineering, a fastener is completely worthless if its metallurgical integrity cannot be legally and empirically proven. The document that guarantees this integrity is the Mill Test Certificate (MTC). The global gold standard for MTCs is defined by the European standard EN 10204 3.1. A fully integrated MTC for an A193 B8 Class 1 fastener acts as the component's metallurgical DNA, including:

  • Complete Traceability: Records the heat number—a unique identifier linking the finished bolt back to the exact ladle of molten steel at the primary casting mill.
  • Chemical Spectrography: Provides the precise, empirically measured chemical composition of the batch.
  • Mechanical Verification: Lists the actual results of destructive laboratory testing performed on samples from the batch (ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation percentage, and hardness).
  • Thermal Processing Data: Certifies that the batch underwent proper carbide solution treatment (annealing) to meet Class 1 mandates.

■ Dimensions of Heavy Hex Bolts (ASME B18.2.1 / DIN 931)

Standard dimensional specifications for ASME B18.2.1 Heavy Hex Bolts, the most commonly specified head geometry for A193 B8 bolting due to its wider bearing surface. Note: Metric equivalents (DIN) are available upon custom request.

Nominal Size (in) Threads per Inch (TPI) Width Across Flats (Max) Head Height (Max) Width Across Corners (Min)

■ Chemical Composition (per ASTM A193)

Grade C (Max) Cr Ni Mn (Max) Si (Max) P (Max) S (Max)
B8 (S30400) 0.08% 18.0 - 20.0% 8.0 - 11.0% 2.00% 1.00% 0.045% 0.030%
Metallurgical Note: To strictly conform to ASTM A193, Grade B8 material must undergo a carbide solution treatment. The steel is heated to a minimum of 1900°F (1040°C) to dissolve chromium carbides, then rapidly water-quenched to lock the carbon in solid solution, maximizing corrosion resistance.

■ Mechanical Properties (Class 1)

Diameter Size Range Tensile Strength (Min) Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) Elongation (in 4D) Reduction of Area Max Hardness
All Diameters 75,000 psi (515 MPa) 30,000 psi (205 MPa) 30% Min 50% Min 96 HRB (223 HBW)

*Unlike Class 2, B8 Class 1 mechanical properties remain constant regardless of fastener diameter because the material does not rely on cross-sectional strain hardening for its strength.

■ Applicable Standards & Specifications

Application Type Bolts & Studs Nuts Grade Designation
High-Temp / Pressure Vessels ASTM A193 ASTM A194 B8 (Class 1) / 8
Low-Temp / Cryogenic Service ASTM A320 ASTM A194 B8 (Class 1) / 8
Forged Flanges & Fittings ASME B16.5 ASME B18.2.2 Heavy Hex Series

■ The Engineering Debate: Class 1 vs. Class 2

The most critical engineering distinction when specifying ASTM A193 B8 is selecting between Class 1 and Class 2. Class 1 is fully annealed, providing supreme ductility and maximum corrosion resistance, but at a relatively low yield strength (30 ksi). It is highly resilient against stress-corrosion cracking at elevated temperatures.

Conversely, Class 2 is strain-hardened (cold-worked) to drastically elevate yield strength (up to 100 ksi), allowing for much higher clamping forces. However, this strain-hardening introduces internal stresses and slightly reduces high-temperature corrosion resistance. Engineers must carefully calculate whether their flange joint requires the high torque loads of Class 2, or the thermal stability and ductility of Class 1.

■ Fastener Types Available

To support high-pressure containment infrastructure, ASTM A193 B8 Class 1 is predominantly manufactured into specialized geometries designed for heavy-duty torque application and flange sealing.

Fastener Category Standard and Specialty Types Available Primary Engineering Function
High-Pressure Studs Fully Threaded Stud Bolts, Double-End Studs, Tap End Studs. The industry standard for mating ASME B16.5 pipe flanges; allows precise tensioning from both ends.
Heavy Industrial Bolts Heavy Hex Bolts, Hex Cap Screws, Socket Head Cap Screws. Heavy hex provides a broader load-bearing footprint under the head, crucial for high-pressure sealing.
Industrial Nuts (A194) Heavy Hex Nuts, Jam Nuts, Coupling Nuts. Strictly matched with ASTM A194 Grade 8 heavy hex nuts to prevent thread stripping under load.

■ Engineering FAQs

  • 1. What is the difference between standard SS 304 and ASTM A193 B8?
Chemically, they are nearly identical (UNS S30400). However, ASTM A193 is a rigorous manufacturing specification designed for pressure vessels and high-temperature service. A bolt simply stamped "304" may not have undergone the verified testing, tracking, and strict carbide solution treatment mandated by the A193 B8 standard.
  • 2. Can B8 Class 1 bolts be used in sub-zero applications?
Yes. The fully austenitic structure of Class 1 maintains exceptional impact toughness at cryogenic temperatures. For formalized, guaranteed low-temperature service down to -320°F (-195°C), the sister specification ASTM A320 Grade B8 is often utilized, which includes supplementary Charpy V-Notch impact testing.
  • 3. What nuts should be paired with an A193 B8 Class 1 stud?
Engineers must pair A193 B8 fasteners exclusively with ASTM A194 Grade 8 Heavy Hex Nuts. Mixing random stainless steel nuts compromises the engineered load capacity and thermal expansion characteristics of the flanged joint.
