Grade B8F and B8FA are based on AISI 303, known as a "free-machining" stainless steel. The high levels of Sulfur (minimum 0.15%) or Selenium create inclusions in the metal. When the material is machined or turned, these inclusions cause the metal chips to break off cleanly and easily, reducing friction, lowering tool wear, and allowing for much faster production speeds compared to standard 304 or 316 stainless.
Grade B8F (Class 1) is carbide solution treated prior to final threading and machining. Grade B8FA (Class 1A) is carbide solution treated in the finished condition. Because 303 stainless is often heavily machined, solution treating the finished part removes any severe residual stresses caused by the cutting tools, ensuring optimal ductility and a strictly controlled maximum hardness of 90 HRB.
Yes. The sulfur stringers that make the steel easy to machine also provide microscopic initiation sites for corrosion. While B8F/B8FA still offers good oxidation resistance and is suitable for many high-temperature applications, it has slightly lower general corrosion resistance and pitting resistance compared to its non-free-machining counterpart, Grade B8 (AISI 304).
