ASTM A193 GRADE B8M CLASS 2 BOLTS — DATASHEET, DIMENSIONS & MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Ananka Fasteners is a premier global manufacturer and supplier of ASTM A193 Grade B8M Class 2 Fasteners. Manufactured from AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel (UNS S31600), these highly engineered fasteners are alloyed with 2-3% Molybdenum to provide exceptional defense against chloride-induced pitting in harsh marine and chemical environments. Following an initial carbide solution treatment, these components undergo a rigorous strain-hardening (cold-working) process.

This deliberate mechanical deformation physically compresses the internal grain structure, drastically elevating the material's yield strength up to 95,000 psi (95 ksi) for smaller diameters. This makes Grade B8M Class 2 the definitive choice for high-pressure offshore flanged joints and petrochemical pipelines that require massive, sustained clamping forces combined with marine-grade corrosion resistance. All our B8M Class 2 high-tensile studs, heavy hex bolts, and threaded rods are guaranteed by EN 10204 Type 3.1 Material Test Certificates (MTC).

■ Mill Test Certificate (MTC) Integration

Because the defining mechanical properties of Class 2 are achieved through a physical manufacturing process, the EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate is the only empirical proof of structural integrity. Ananka Fasteners’ MTCs for B8M Class 2 components explicitly detail:

  • Diameter-Specific Mechanical Verification: Lists actual destructive test results proving the batch meets the specific Tensile and Yield strength limits mandated for its exact diameter size bracket.
  • Hardness Limit Proof: Verified laboratory results ensuring the strain-hardening did not push the material past the brittle threshold of 35 HRC / 321 HBW.
  • Chemical Spectrography: Verification of standard 316 alloy chemistry, specifically guaranteeing the 2.0-3.0% Molybdenum content.
  • Complete Traceability: Heat number documentation linking the finished strain-hardened bolt back to the primary steel casting.

UNS Number S31600
Corresponding Nut Grade ASTM A194 Grade 8M
Density 8.00 g/cm³ (8,000 kg/m³)

Metallurgical Note: The chemical foundation of Class 2 is exactly identical to Class 1. Austenitic stainless steels like 316 cannot be hardened via thermal heat treatment (quenching and tempering). The immense physical strength of Class 2 is achieved strictly through mechanical compaction—pulling the raw bar stock through precision dies to align the grain structure and create internal dislocations that resist further yielding.

■ Mechanical Properties (Class 2)

Diameter Size Range Tensile Strength (Min) Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) Elongation (in 4D) Reduction of Area Max Hardness
Up to 3/4" inclusive 110,000 psi (760 MPa) 95,000 psi (655 MPa) 15% Min 45% Min 35 HRC (321 HBW)
Over 3/4" to 1" inclusive 100,000 psi (690 MPa) 80,000 psi (550 MPa) 20% Min 45% Min 35 HRC (321 HBW)
Over 1" to 1-1/4" inclusive 95,000 psi (655 MPa) 65,000 psi (450 MPa) 25% Min 45% Min 35 HRC (321 HBW)
Over 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" inclusive 90,000 psi (620 MPa) 50,000 psi (345 MPa) 30% Min 45% Min 35 HRC (321 HBW)

*Crucial Engineering Note: Strain-hardening is a physical outside-in process. The core of larger diameter bars cannot be compressed as tightly as the exterior surface. Therefore, the guaranteed yield and tensile strength limits progressively and significantly decrease as the fastener diameter increases.

■ Applicable Standards & Specifications

Application Type Bolts & Studs Nuts Grade Designation
High-Pressure Offshore Joints ASTM A193 ASTM A194 B8M (Class 2) / 8M
High-Stress Cryogenic Marine ASTM A320 ASTM A194 B8M (Class 2) / 8M
Heavy Pressure Vessel Flanges ASME B16.5 ASME B18.2.2 Heavy Hex Series

■ The Marine Engineering Trade-Off: Strength vs. SCC

The choice to specify ASTM A193 B8M Class 2 is usually driven by the necessity for extreme clamping force in a corrosive saltwater environment. However, this specification carries a significant engineering trade-off.

Standard B8M Class 1 (Annealed) provides pristine ductility and is highly immune to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC), but its low yield strength (30 ksi) may allow high-pressure flanges to leak. B8M Class 2 (Strain-Hardened) solves the pressure issue with a massive yield strength upgrade (up to 95 ksi), securing the joint. However, the severe cold-working introduces internal stresses into the metal. In highly aggressive environments (such as heated coastal refineries or environments with hydrogen sulfide), these internal stresses act as initiation points for SCC, leading to sudden, brittle failures. Engineers must carefully balance the need for mechanical clamp load against environmental aggressiveness.

■ Engineering FAQs

  • 1. Is B8M Class 2 magnetic?
Yes, it is weakly magnetic. While the base metal (316 stainless) is austenitic and inherently non-magnetic, the intense physical cold-working required to push the yield strength up to 95 ksi causes a portion of the austenite to transform into deformation-induced martensite, creating a distinct magnetic pull.
  • 2. Why does the yield strength decrease for larger B8M Class 2 bolts?
Unlike heat treatment which penetrates the entire core of the fastener, strain-hardening is a physical cold-working process. The core of a very thick diameter bar (e.g., 1.5 inches) does not receive the same degree of mechanical compaction as the outer surface, resulting in a lower total average yield strength for larger sizes compared to smaller sizes.
  • 3. Is ASTM A193 B8M Class 2 compliant with NACE MR0175 for sour gas?
No. NACE MR0175 regulations strictly limit the maximum hardness of austenitic stainless fasteners to 22 HRC (approx 99 HRB) to prevent sulfide stress cracking in H2S environments. Because B8M Class 2 relies on strain-hardening and permits hardness up to 35 HRC, it is strictly prohibited for NACE sour service. Engineers must specify B8MNA or switch to an exotic alloy.
