This grade, frequently commercialized as 254 SMO®, is designed for the most aggressive environments where standard 316L fails. It features extremely high levels of Molybdenum (up to 6.50%), Chromium, and Nitrogen. This combination results in a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) well over 42, giving it corrosion resistance comparable to much more expensive nickel-based alloys in seawater and pulp mill bleach plants.
The controlled addition of Copper (0.50% - 1.00%) is critical for improving the material's resistance to strong reducing acids. While the high molybdenum content handles chloride pitting, the copper specifically helps the fastener survive exposure to sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids.
Yes, the MTC document strictly states that the material has been verified as free from radioactive contamination and has undergone a 100% visual inspection to ensure it is completely free from manufacturing defects before dispatch.
