Metallurgical Note: XM-19 is an incredibly complex alloy. It utilizes very high levels of Chromium (corrosion resistance), elevated Manganese and Nitrogen (which massively increases yield strength while acting as potent austenite stabilizers), Molybdenum (pitting resistance), and Niobium/Vanadium (high-temp stabilization). This creates a structural matrix that simply will not break down in aggressive chlorides or hydrogen sulfide.

  • 1. Is B8R (Nitronic 50) magnetic like B8 Class 2?
    No, absolutely not. Unlike standard 300-series stainless steels that become magnetic when cold-worked (due to martensite formation), the massive Manganese and Nitrogen content in XM-19 locks the austenite phase in place. Even if severely cold-worked or exposed to sub-zero temperatures, B8R remains perfectly non-magnetic.
  • 2. Does B8R suffer from thread galling as much as standard stainless?
    No. While all stainless steels have a tendency to gall (cold-weld), the elevated Manganese and Nitrogen alloying in XM-19 significantly improves its surface wear resistance. It has a noticeably lower galling tendency compared to standard 316, making it safer for high-torque assembly.
  • 3. Is ASTM A193 B8RA compliant with NACE MR0175?
    Yes. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 specifically recognizes the elite environmental resistance of UNS S20910.
