Grade B8T and B8TA are made from AISI 321 stainless steel. The addition of Titanium (typically 5 times the carbon content) acts as a stabilizing agent. In high-temperature environments (425–870°C), titanium bonds with carbon to form titanium carbides, preventing the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries. This prevents "sensitization" and protects the fastener against intergranular corrosion and weld decay.
While both are Titanium-stabilized 321 stainless steel, Grade B8T (Class 1) is carbide solution treated prior to final machining and threading. Grade B8TA (Class 1A) is carbide solution treated in the finished condition (after all forming is complete). This final heat treatment removes any residual stresses caused by cold working, resulting in a softer, highly ductile fastener with a strict maximum hardness of 90 HRB (compared to 96 HRB for B8T).
Yes, the MTC document strictly states that the material has been verified as free from radioactive contamination and has undergone a 100% visual inspection to ensure it is completely free from manufacturing defects before dispatch.
