Grade 3 is an intermediate alloy steel specification characterized primarily by a 5% Chromium and 0.5% Molybdenum addition. It is essentially an ASTM A182 F5 or AISI 501 equivalent material, commonly paired with ASTM A193 Grade B5 bolts for specialized pipeline and refinery applications.
The 5% Chromium content in Grade 3 provides significantly improved resistance to oxidation, scaling, and mild corrosion at elevated temperatures compared to standard or lower-alloy carbon steels (like 2H or 4). While it shares the same 150 ksi (1034 MPa) proof load requirement, its high-temperature durability is superior.
The MTC logs a Quench and Temper phase. ASTM A194 requires that Grade 3 nuts be reheated above their critical temperature, quenched in a liquid medium, and then tempered at a minimum temperature of 1050°F (565°C). This ensures a perfect balance of hardness (24-35 HRC) and ductility.
