AISI 410 is a martensitic stainless steel that allows the fastener to achieve high mechanical strength and hardness through thermal quenching and tempering. The ~12% Chromium content provides good atmospheric and environmental corrosion resistance, as well as scale resistance up to 649°C (1200°F), making it perfect for steam valves, refineries, and chemical plant infrastructure.
ASTM A194 requires Grade 6 nuts to be tempered at a minimum temperature of 593°C (1100°F). This step relieves internal stresses caused by the quenching process, optimizes the material's structural ductility, and enhances resistance against stress corrosion cracking (SCC) while maintaining a strict hardness window.
To comply with ASTM A194 Grade 6 parameters, nuts must show a Brinell hardness value between 248 and 352 HBW, which converts to approximately 24 to 38 HRC on the Rockwell scale. This ensuring the threads possess sufficient yield capacity to resist stripping without becoming overly brittle under heavy preload parameters.
