Grade 8 is manufactured from AISI Type 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel. It contains approximately 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel. This specific chemistry provides excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, making it a standard choice for chemical processing and marine environments, as well as cryogenic (extremely low temperature) applications.
During manufacturing, stainless steel can precipitate chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, which lowers its corrosion resistance. The MTC confirms that the nuts were heated to at least 1900°F (1040°C) to dissolve these carbides back into the alloy solution, followed by a rapid water quench to lock them in place, ensuring maximum corrosion resistance.
While Grade 8 is made from Type 304 stainless steel, Grade 8M is made from Type 316 stainless steel. The main difference is that Grade 8M contains the addition of Molybdenum (typically 2-3%), which gives it far superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-heavy environments (like seawater or de-icing salts).
