Grade 8C is manufactured from AISI Type 347 Austenitic Stainless Steel. This specific alloy is similar to standard 18/8 stainless steel but features a strategic addition of Columbium (Niobium) and Tantalum, making it highly resistant to intergranular corrosion after extended exposure to elevated temperatures.
When standard austenitic stainless steels (like Grade 8 / Type 304) are exposed to high temperatures (800°F - 1500°F) or welded, chromium carbides can precipitate at the grain boundaries, leading to "sensitization" and subsequent corrosion. The Columbium/Niobium in Grade 8C binds with the carbon instead of the chromium, maintaining the steel's corrosion resistance even after severe thermal exposure.
While Grade 8 (Type 304) is excellent for general corrosion resistance, it is susceptible to carbide precipitation at high temperatures. Grade 8C (Type 347) solves this issue with its Columbium/Niobium stabilization. Therefore, Grade 8C is the preferred choice for heavy hex nuts utilized in high-temperature applications, such as aircraft exhaust stacks, heat exchangers, and heavy welded equipment.
