The "F" designates that this is a Free-Machining grade of stainless steel (equivalent to AISI Type 303). It contains a deliberate addition of Sulfur or Selenium (minimum 0.15%). These elements form microscopic non-metallic inclusions in the steel matrix that cause machining chips to break off cleanly, significantly improving cutting speeds and reducing tool wear when threading nuts.
Grade 8 is made from standard Type 304 stainless steel, which can be somewhat gummy and difficult to machine. Grade 8F (Type 303) solves this with the free-machining additives. However, there is a trade-off: the added Sulfur or Selenium slightly reduces the overall corrosion resistance of Grade 8F compared to Grade 8, making it slightly less suitable for highly aggressive marine or chemical environments.
During manufacturing, austenitic stainless steels can precipitate chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, which lowers their natural corrosion resistance. The MTC confirms that the nuts were reheated to at least 1900°F (1040°C) to dissolve these carbides fully back into the alloy solution, followed by a rapid water quench to lock the optimal microstructure in place.
