ToggleASTM A194 Grade 8M covers heavy hex nuts made from austenitic stainless steel for high-pressure, high-temperature applications. The nuts described herein are used when higher resistance to corrosion than is available under Specification A194 Grade 2 is required. Application Nuts manufactured under this specification are used in all industries where exceptionally good corrosion resistance is demanded such as the petrochemical, chemical processing, oil and gas, and power generation industries. The “8M” specification defines that nuts are composed of a modified austenitic stainless steel, usually Type 316 or 316L; it added molybdenum for additional corrosion resistance.
The Type 316 or 316L austenitic stainless steel alloy containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum is used in the production of ASTM A194 Grade 8M nuts. Molybdenum addition in the alloy helps it resist pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-exposed or chemically corrosive environments. With the help of this austenitic nature, nuts can operate at both the cryogenic and high-temperature ranges.
Excellent corrosion resistance: Addition of molybdenum to stainless steel makes it resistant to corrosive environments, specifically in marine atmospheres, and also in chlorides and acidic environments.
High and Cryogenic Properties: Grade 8M nut maintains its mechanical properties for elevated temperatures. They can thus find applications in pressure vessels and flanges under such high-temperature conditions. It also has toughness and structural integrity under cryogenic temperatures.
Good Mechanical Strength: These nuts provide tensile strength and toughness for reliable performance at high pressure and stress.
Versatility: The right nut, which include ASTM A194 Grade 8M with suitable for use with stainless steel bolts and also having ASTM A193 Grades B8M and B8M Class 2.
